These new farmers are being led by one of the CC's Farmer Mentors (with shovel in hand) to install a small water-recycling ornamental fish farm. Here we see them preparing the gravel that will become the media for the filtration system (cleansing the farm’s water of waste matter before it is recycled back into the system). This participatory process fosters camaraderie and builds the capacity of new farmers to understand every detail about how the system works.

Agricultural Diversification

This farmer is one of the 80 beneficiaries of TCC's European Union (EU) funded Diversify to Compete Project (Innovation, Technology and Collaboration in a Deep Rural Community), being implemented in Northern St. Catherine. The EU provided €240,000 (J$30,000,000) to help former banana farmers to diversify into new demand driven crops.

Dr Beverly Morgan, Head of TCC, listens as the Manager of one of Singapore's premier Ornamental Fish export company’s starts off a tour of their facility by telling the story of how the company was founded. Listening alongside Dr Morgan are representatives from Singapore’s Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) and the export promotion agency IE Singapore. The tour was part of a larger market learning initiative to build TCC’s capacity on ornamental fish exporting.
